Here are a couple of birthday cakes I made recently. The chocolate one was for Millie who turned 83. She’s the proprietor of Hampton Bays’ Wine & Spirits and she’s sharp as a tack. I promised her last summer that I’d make her a cake for her birthday. The reason I remembered is because her birthday is one day before my father’s (he just turned 88). It was an easy cake to make: essentially I used the same recipe I did for my Valentine’s Day cake, except I brushed the sides with hazelnut praline which I found in the freezer.
This second one was for my mother-in-law’s 79th birthday last week. She has a real passion for all that is hazelnut. So I made a six layer genoise, chocolate-hazelnut meringue layer cake with hazelnut praline buttercream. I sprinkled some leftover truffle coating that the other gourmaniac used for her Chocolate Truffles. The cake was taller than it was wide, and more incredibly delicious than imaginable.
